My First ARC Experience Reading Ice Shy by K.M. Gillis

Ice Shy by K.M. Gillis is a heartfelt romance, and I had the pleasure of receiving an ARC to review. You can check it out on Goodreads, and let me just say this… my first ARC experience did not disappoint.

This romance novel is layered with love, truth, acceptance, and real, lived-in trauma that makes both characters feel incredibly human. From the very beginning, I found myself emotionally connected to both Arthur and Elliot, and that connection only deepened as their story unfolded.

If you love emotionally driven romance with depth, Ice Shy by K.M. Gillis delivers in all the right ways. And, if you enjoyed this review, you can also check out my thoughts on Icebreaker by Hannah Grace.

Arthur and Elliot: Love Without Changing Each Other

One of my favorite parts of Ice Shy by K.M. Gillis is how Arthur and Elliot’s relationship is built on support, not transformation.

Elliot is a single mom juggling multiple jobs just to stay afloat, and I deeply admire her resilience. She works tirelessly for the life she’s building, and her strength feels real and grounded. There’s nothing overly dramatized about her story. It’s honest, and that’s what makes it powerful.

Arthur, on the other hand, carries deep emotional wounds. His upbringing, especially his father’s cruelty and absence, shaped his fear of letting people in. That fear of bringing someone into his life and potentially ruining something good felt incredibly relatable. As someone navigating life single in my 30s, I understood that hesitation more than I expected to.

What I loved most is that neither of them had to change to be loved. This is something Ice Shy by K.M. Gillis handles beautifully, making their relationship feel real and grounded. They met each other where they were. They supported each other, grew together, and built something safe. Their connection felt genuine, and their sweet banter throughout the book made their relationship even more enjoyable to read.

Themes of Trauma, Acceptance, and Growth in Ice Shy by K.M. Gillis

At its core, Ice Shy by K.M. Gillis is a story about healing.

Both Arthur and Elliot carry their own forms of trauma, but the story never rushes their growth. Instead, it allows them space to process, to trust, and to slowly open up. That pacing made their relationship feel authentic rather than forced.

The theme of acceptance stood out the most to me. Not just acceptance from others, but self-acceptance. Watching both characters learn they are worthy of love, exactly as they are, is what made this story stick with me long after I finished it.

Why the Found Family Stood Out

The supporting characters in Ice Shy by K.M. Gillis truly elevated the story.

The Otters team, along with Elliot, Arthur, and Sam, created such a strong sense of found family. Their dynamic added warmth, humor, and emotional depth that balanced out the heavier themes in the book.

It’s a reminder that family isn’t always about blood. It’s about love, connection, and the people you choose to stand beside you.

If you’re a fan of found family tropes, this book absolutely delivers.

Final Thoughts on Ice Shy by K.M. Gillis

Overall, Ice Shy by K.M. Gillis is a heartfelt, emotional romance that blends love, trauma, and healing in a way that feels real and meaningful.

It’s not just about falling in love. It’s about learning to accept love, trust it, and believe you deserve it.

If you enjoy character-driven romance with emotional depth, strong personal journeys, and a beautiful found family dynamic, this is definitely a book worth adding to your list.

📚 What I’m Reading Next

📚 Up next in Tawni’s Book NookThe Deal by Elle Kennedy

I’m continuing the hockey romance era with The Deal by Elle Kennedy, and I’m so excited for this one. Not only is it a fan-favorite in the sports romance world, but it’s also getting a TV adaptation on Amazon Prime Video, set to release on May 13th.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I can finish the book before the show drops, but either way, I’ll definitely be reading it in its entirety before watching. I already know I’ll want to do a full compare and contrast between the book and the series.

There’s just something about page-to-screen adaptations that I love, especially when it comes to romance.
